Selected Poems
BY John N. Morris
Washington University Press, $17.95

This book, lucidly introduced by Helen Vendler, collects the four slender volumes John N. Morris published during his lifetime. He received little recognition when alive, but his achievement seems substantial now. Morris's medium is sadness, though it never feels professional or automatic. It isn't a mood but a mode of truth, scored with hard experience, an exacting self-awareness, and—most importantly—a quiet but persistent hope. Morris has the ice-like clarity of Donald Justice, and he writes consistently at that level. A few of these poems will likely be around after most of our more prolific and publicly laurelled poets have been long forgotten.
