He received little recognition when alive, but his achievement seems substantial now. Morris's medium is sadness, though it never feels professional or automatic. It isn't a mood but a mode of truth, scored with hard experience, an exacting self-awareness, and—most importantly—a quiet but persistent hope. Morris has the ice-like clarity of Donald Justice, and he writes consistently at that level.
