The combined October-November issue of Poetry is devoted to contemporary poetry in German. Featuring the work by 32 poets, the issue begins with poems by Gottfried Benn, Bertolt Brecht, Ingeborg Bachmann and other important precursors, then focuses on poets still producing, from well-established figures like Ernst Jandl and Oskar Pastior to younger, emerging writers including Barbara Köhler, Durs Grünbein, Raoul Schrott, and Marcel Beyer. All of the translations, which are often presented alongside the original German text, were specially commissioned from such writers as former US Poet Laureate Rita Dove, novelist Fred Viebahn, Michael Hofmann, Margitt Lehbert, and Ursula Runde. Some of the work translated has never before appeared in English. Joachim Sartorius, who co-edited the issue with Joseph Parisi and Karin Graf, gives an overview of the current scene in his essay "'Language, Foreign: Saying You and Being Heard': On Poetry in German, 1986-1996."
